On the tracks

The Mumbai local trains carry more than 6.1 million commuters on a daily basis. It has the highest passenger density of any urban railway system in the world. The Mumbai locals have an amazing reach and due to that it is used quite excessively by the local urban population. However the numbers are not synonymous with infrastructure. Overcrowding is an ever growing problem (4,700 passengers are packed into a 9-car rake during peak hours, having a carrying capacity of 1,700).
