Till now, my tales about Bulletwalla have been confined to the geographic boundaries of India and to be true to myself, it was becoming a tad bit monotonous. Since Royal Enfields are made and sold in many parts of the world, I was eager to find a bulletwalla who did not hail from my country. This thirst of mine was quenched when I finally got to know about Mr. Kathamandu- Mr. Sunder Shyam Jha.
Little did one know that the hunk who made many a girls’ heart skip a beat was himself drawn to a particular beauty. It was sometime in the year 1979 when Sunder Shyam Jha finally found something that suited his personality. After having ridden a Triumph and a BSA, Sunder Shyam Jha was really eager to get his hands on a Royal Enfield from the day it was introduced in Nepal. And this wasn’t as easy as it seemed, at the time, the Royal Enfield cost 18,000 Rupees and he could only afford to pay 12,000. So, he found a solution, he went on to work extra hours and he became the 3rd man in Nepal to make a Royal Enfield purchase. Soon, Sunder Shyam Jha was thumping on roads of Nepal.
Soon after, he picked up the passion for riding. His first long ride followed and approximated about 550kms to Patna. When I questioned him about what precautions he took while riding to Patna as high quality riding gear was not available in those days, I was amazed to hear that he used horse riding boots and a special kind of suit which protected his elbow and knees.
Soon, followed a Kathmandu-Delhi journey. During his smooth ride, he took the Old highway named Mahindra Raj Marg and reached the Indian border called Raxaul and then entered India from this border.
When I questioned Bulletwalla Sunder Shyam Jha about this favourite ride he said it was the Kathmandu – Patna ride for him. Still pondering over the question, he added that he took this ride just to meet his wife.
Lastly, when I asked him the difference between a Royal Enfield and other normal bikes, I got the best answer I have ever heard. He very smugly expressed “An Arabian Horse cannot be compared to a pony.”
Still at the age of 61, Sunder Shyam Jha is the proud owner of the mean machine and continues with it, his passion for riding.
